Oman says Hormuz talks with Iran, Gulf states postponed

Oman has postponed a planned meeting between Iran and Gulf states on the Strait of Hormuz, amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. The Omani foreign ministry cited the need to create conditions for a constructive dialogue, according to the Oman News Agency. Iran had invited Iraq and other Gulf nations to negotiate the future of the strategically vital strait, which is crucial for global oil and gas trade.

However, no country in the region has confirmed attendance, with Bahrain ruling out participation. The blockade of Hormuz, imposed by Iran and later the US, has driven oil prices past $100 a barrel, despite a June agreement between Washington and Tehran failing over Hormuz-related disagreements. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi reiterated Oman's commitment to fostering stability and cooperation in the region.

Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi rebels have gained leverage due to recent offensive successes, threatening a second critical waterway, Bab al-Mandab. Despite the ongoing blockade, the strait was previously free for shipping before the war. Iran now requires vessel permission and even considers imposing service fees, targeting non-compliant ships with strikes. The US occasionally bombards Iran's coastline to challenge its control over Hormuz.
