No corners to pass on: Verstappen’s warning for Spanish GP

MADRID, Sept 13 — Max Verstappen is confident it will be extremely difficult for him to overtake his rivals during Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix on the newly constructed hybrid circuit in the Spanish capital. The world champion, who qualified third for Red Bull, expressed his appreciation for the work done to create the new Formula One venue, despite his reluctance for street tracks.

Lando Norris secured pole position for McLaren, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and Verstappen's teammate George Russell are currently separated by 66 points. Verstappen commented that the circuit is "very cool," but stated that there are a few corners that could potentially be altered to improve overtaking opportunities.

He further mentioned that if he were to have a chance of winning, it would be nearly impossible due to the lack of passing opportunities on the track. Verstappen acknowledged that the long runs were particularly challenging during practice sessions, with a significant amount of tire degradation occurring for all drivers. He anticipates that the key to success in tomorrow’s race may lie in aggressively utilizing tire wear.

Antonelli concurred with Verstappen, expressing uncertainty about the resilience of the hard tyre, which could result in either two or three stops during the race. Verstappen added that he appreciates the grip provided by the asphalt, despite some areas being somewhat bumpy for a new track.
