Nepal govt report says floods led to estimated $4.7 billion recovery, reconstruction needs

Nepal has estimated the reconstruction costs for the devastating August 26 floods at around $4.78 billion, significantly higher than the initial government estimate of $1.8 billion in direct damage and $883 million in associated losses. The floods, which struck the Bhote Koshi system near Nepal's border with China, caused widespread destruction, including homes, transport links, hydropower facilities, and critical infrastructure.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the figures came from a Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment conducted after the floods tore through northern river valleys. About $57.67 million will be required for short-term recovery and rebuilding over the next six months, while around $4.71 billion will be needed for longer-term reconstruction. The government is also conducting a more comprehensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment to determine the full scale of losses and recovery priorities.

Search and recovery operations are ongoing, with 1,385 bodies recovered and roughly 5,130 people still missing, including about 600 foreign nationals. A total of 13,676 people have been rescued. Damage to power infrastructure has been particularly severe, with at least 12 hydropower projects affected and various roads, bridges, electricity connections, and telecommunications severed.

The reconstruction estimate highlights the gap between immediate humanitarian financing and the long-term rebuilding task. The United Nations and humanitarian partners have launched a $49.6 million emergency appeal to support over 84,000 people, focusing on shelter, health, food, water, and protection as winter approaches. Nepal has sought additional international assistance for specialized rescue and recovery work, including equipment such as high-capacity drones, LiDAR systems, and surge pumps.
