My parents opposed my decision to pursue art – Aewura Arts

Ghanaian artist Aewura Adjoa, also known as Aewura Arts, spoke about the resistance she faced from her parents when she decided to pursue a career in art. Her love for drawing began in her childhood and remained strong throughout her school years, despite her parents' desire for her to have a more stable career. "I've always been drawing," Aewura said, recalling how she drew characters from storybooks, designed letters for friends, and even drew her teachers.

Initially, her parents were unhappy when she chose Visual Arts at Mfantsiman Girls' Senior High School. They questioned her ability to make a living from the arts, despite her stubborn determination to follow her passion. Aewura initially studied Ceramics and Graphic Design, inspired by her fascination with billboards. However, she later discovered that she enjoyed picture-making most.

After finishing high school, her parents pushed her towards a more secure career, leading her to enroll at the Accra College of Education and teach for a year. Despite enjoying teaching, Aewura struggled with the demands of the profession. She then returned to drawing from her dining table at home and started sharing her work on social media, gradually building a following and attracting requests for her services.

Her parents eventually accepted her career choice and began supporting her by buying art supplies. Today, Aewura Adjoa has established herself as a pencil artist, creating portraits for clients in Ghana and beyond. She has even had the opportunity to meet prominent figures such as former President John Agyekum Kufuor, business executive Joyce Aryee, Nigerian music star Davido, and American YouTuber IShowSpeed. Looking ahead, Aewura plans to establish an institution to train and nurture upcoming artists.
