Mukunji claims 100 police officers deployed at his rural home

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji claimed in a Facebook post that around 100 police officers were stationed outside his rural home starting at 6am on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Mukunji argued that a simple police summons would have sufficed instead of the large deployment. He directed his criticism towards Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, questioning the need for such a significant number of officers at his residence in a rural area.

Mukunji stated that authorities could have issued a summon to any police station instead of sending officers to his home, describing the deployment as unnecessary and a misuse of taxpayers' dollars. The MP added that he had already left the home and was attending church in Mwea. The claim of 100 officers at Mukunji's home comes in the wake of a violent incident that disrupted a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) meeting in Nembure, Embu County, where police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, leading to one death, six vehicles being torched, and several injuries.

Mukunji denied any involvement and claimed he had become a scapegoat for problems in Embu. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also alleged that the police were seeking to arrest Mukunji over the Nembure violence, accusing the UDA leaders of using the police for intimidation. Mukunji's Facebook post reflected the growing political tension in Embu following the UDA meeting violence, with competing accusations over responsibility for the disruption.
