‘Mere politics’ behind calls for new Tabung Haji probes, says Puad

Former Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi dismissed calls for new investigations into irregularities at Tabung Haji as mere politics aimed at disregarding the findings of a previous royal commission of inquiry (RCI). Speaking at a public forum in Johor Bahru, Puad emphasized that the RCI report should not be politicized and that the culprits must be held accountable.

The RCI report, declassified in July, revealed a government bailout of nearly RM20 billion to cover losses resulting from poor investments, weak decision-making, misconduct of former directors, and suspicious approval processes. Four individuals, including a former chairman, have been charged, with a former minister expected to face charges as well.

Puad described the RCI report as exemplary, highlighting its exposé of mismanagement, 75 recommendations, and the proposal for investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the police. He stressed that "sakau," which refers to the looting or embezzlement of public funds, encompasses more than just financial theft.

Unauthorized use of Tabung Haji Act provisions, excessive allowances, and distributing hibah at high rates despite the fund's strained finances also constitute "sakau." This response appeared to be directed at Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who had called for proof of the theft allegations and questioned whether providing high dividends to depositors and subsidies for pilgrims' costs could be considered "sakau."
