Uniform Civil Code in all NDA states before 2029 Lok Sabha polls: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be adopted in all NDA-ruled states prior to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, though the government is still deliberating on the creation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with stakeholders. During a press conference in Mumbai, Shah expressed pride in the removal of the triple talaq law and the scrapping of Article 370, stating that Kashmir remains an integral part of India.

He reiterated the BJP's promise in the 2024 election manifesto to enforce the UCC across all 21 BJP-ruled states. The party aims to establish a uniform legal framework for marriage, inheritance, and divorce, while exempting tribal groups to preserve their cultural heritage. Regarding the NRC, Shah mentioned ongoing discussions with alliance partners and stakeholders in Manipur.

He highlighted the government's successful implementation of various reforms in social, economic, and criminal justice sectors, citing a 30% conviction rate under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Shah also mentioned the government's aggressive stance against Naxalism and terrorism, showcasing their determination to combat these issues.

The Home Minister hinted at a crackdown on illegal immigrants, emphasizing that every single individual attempting to enter the country illegally would be identified and deported. Shah expressed confidence in India's ability to eliminate the drug menace, as well as the success of the BJP's Seva Sankalp Abhiyan campaign. Inaugurating an exhibition of manuscripts titled "Shri Ganesh Dnyanarati" at the Asiatic Society of Mumbai, Shah emphasized the importance of uninhibited knowledge and the preservation of India's culture, archives, and languages.

The minister also announced plans to invest Rs 50,000 crore in the gems and jewellery industry, with the construction of a new gem and jewellery bourse in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
