Mahama says he’ll continue inherited gov’t policies, but not Akufo-Addo’s personal Cathedral pledge

President John Mahama clarified that the National Cathedral project was not a government policy inherited from the previous administration, but rather a personal pledge made by former President Nana Akufo-Addo to God. Despite pledging to continue inherited policies and projects when in the public interest, the National Cathedral does not meet that criterion.

Mahama stressed that taxpayers' money should not be used to fund the cathedral, as Christians in Ghana should be able to contribute the necessary resources themselves. He also raised concerns about the project's location, stating that the area already houses several major public institutions and facilities, which would be inconvenienced by the cathedral's construction.

Mahama further criticized the demolition of properties to clear the site, including 10 judges' residences, the Malian Ambassador's residence, and the old passport office. He pointed out that a forensic audit of the project's finances, totaling almost $90 million, has been completed and is awaiting review by the Christian Council of Ghana.
