KT is reinforcing its supply chain for essential media device chipsets while simultaneously broadening its technological partnerships in artificial intelligence. In the face of growing demand for stable semiconductor supplies, the South Korean telecommunications giant has signed a memorandum of understanding with global fabless semiconductor firm Amlogic during IBC 2026, which took place in Amsterdam, Netherlands from September 11 to 14.
Amlogic, headquartered in California, has been a longstanding collaborator with KT in the media sector and the two companies have previously worked together on the development of the world's first 8K Android TV set-top box.
The primary objective of this agreement is to guarantee a consistent supply of key chipsets utilized in KT Group's media devices, as well as to explore ways to enhance supply chain efficiency. As global semiconductor supply chains experience ongoing uncertainty, and media devices demand increasingly sophisticated computing capabilities, securing crucial components becomes vital for device production and maintaining the continuity of media services.
A more predictable chipset supply would also benefit KT's device manufacturing partners, ensuring greater stability in their operations.
Beyond the SoC supply, KT and Amlogic plan to collaborate on technologies aimed at enhancing AI functions and services for KT's media devices. In the rapidly evolving media landscape, where set-top boxes and similar devices are transforming into AI-enabled service platforms, chipset performance and supply stability have become increasingly pivotal factors in the media industry.
To facilitate Korean small and medium-sized companies' expansion into overseas markets, KT has set up the "KT Global Shared Growth Pavilion," which launched in 2013 with eight media technology partners. This year, the pavilion was co-established with South Korea's Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea Foundation for Cooperation of Large & Small Business, Rural Affairs, with assistance from KOTRA's Amsterdam office.
The pavilion showcases a diverse array of technologies, including 8K Android TV set-top boxes, voice-recognition remote controls, on-device AI agent models, OTT and FAST platform solutions, AI-powered video editing, deepfake detection, media-focused subtitle generation and editing platforms, and various optical networking solutions.
Over the past year, KT has participated in major international exhibitions, securing more than 180 billion won ($130 million) in export contracts through these events. Executive Vice President and Head of KT's SCM Office, Kwon Hye-jin, emphasized that the partnership with a global chipset company would bolster the competitiveness of KT's media device chipset supply chain, while supporting stable business operations for its partners.
