Javier Bardem Swears He Didn’t Base His ‘The Beloved’ Director Character on Any of His Previous Collaborators

In Rodrigo Sorogoyen's "The Beloved," Javier Bardem plays a charismatic, world-renowned director reconnecting with his estranged daughter for the first time in 13 years. During an interview at TheWrap’s studio at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, Bardem firmly stated that his character was not based on any of his past collaborators.

He mentioned that he hasn’t received any direct feedback from them, but believes some might be curious about the inspiration behind the character. Bardem admitted he didn’t focus on any particular person while creating the role, instead drawing from situations he’s experienced or witnessed, as well as situations he created himself.

He also shared that he’s encountered situations where directors lose their temper, which he believes is more common in the past but is now less frequent due to increased awareness. Bardem hopes his film addresses these issues, noting that conditions have generally improved, though some directors still tend to exert too much pressure on actors.

Despite this, he reflected on many colleagues during the process, but made it clear that he did not base the character on any specific individual.
