Iranian commercial ship is struck near Strait of Hormuz with 1 dead, Iranian media say

An Iranian commercial ship was hit near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of one crew member and four others wounded, according to Iranian state media. The incident occurred just one day before Iran planned to provide updates on its contentious methods for managing shipping traffic in the region. The Qeshm governor, as reported by the state-run IRNA news agency, attributed the attack to a "terrorist enemy" but has not yet identified the projectile that struck the vessel.

The United Kingdom's Maritime Trade Operations monitor also confirmed that a ship was targeted while passing through the strait, adding that a fire broke out and local authorities were evacuating the crew. No immediate statement was made by the U.S. military, which has previously targeted Iranian-flagged vessels as part of its blockade of Iranian ports.

Qeshm Island, situated approximately 14 miles from the port city of Bandar Abbas, plays a crucial role in Iran's efforts to assert control in the area.
