Iran hardliners launched Hormuz attacks in defiance of leaders, undermining US deal — report

On September 13, a merchant ship operating in the Strait of Hormuz was struck, resulting in one fatality and three injuries, according to local Iranian authorities. The incident occurred around 5:00 am (0130 GMT) off the coasts of Hengam and Qeshm islands. The Qeshm city governor, Amir Teymouri, announced the incident via state TV, although the source of the strike was not specified.

Reports of several explosions near Qeshm, the largest island in the strait, were also received. The UK Maritime Trade Operations monitor reported receiving similar news, indicating that a ship had been struck by an unknown projectile while traveling through the Strait of Hormuz. A fire subsequently broke out on board the vessel following the reported attack, and local authorities are currently assisting in the evacuation of the crew members.

This event takes place on the eve of a meeting between Iran and Gulf states in Oman, which also borders the strategically vital waterway. The meeting aims to address the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States over the control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and gas trade. Iran's control of the strait has been a significant point of contention in their six-month war, with Tehran blocking the waterway and demanding authorization for vessels to pass through.

In response to attacks by the United States and Israel, Iran has imposed restrictions on the strait, including the requirement for vessels to obtain authorization and the potential imposition of service fees. Vessels that do not comply are frequently targeted by Iranian strikes, while the United States periodically bombs the Iranian coast to challenge Tehran's control.
