Indian Railways carries 67.27 crore passengers in August: Suburban travel up 9%

Indian Railways transported a record 67.27 crore passengers during August 2026, marking a 4.7% increase compared to the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Railways. Suburban travel experienced a notable 9% growth, with 38.01 crore passengers utilizing suburban services, up from 34.89 crore in August 2025. This surge in suburban rail usage highlights the continued demand for affordable transportation in densely populated urban regions.

The Railways also operated special trains during the Rakshabandhan festival season, with 144 trips of Rakshabandhan Special trains running between August 25 and 31, 2026, compared to 48 trips in the previous year. Additionally, new Amrit Bharat train services were introduced to expand long-distance passenger connectivity, providing more options for traveling between major cities and regional centers.

The introduction of these services is part of Indian Railways' strategy to improve connectivity and offer greater travel flexibility to passengers. Furthermore, the national transporter has strengthened its freight network, with the commissioning of five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals in August 2026, bringing the total to 149. These terminals, located in various states, contribute to enhancing rail connectivity for industries and bolstering India's logistics infrastructure.

Freight movement increased by 5.4% year-on-year, reaching 137.9 million tonnes in August 2026, compared to 130.9 million tonnes in August 2025. This rise is attributed to heightened demand from key sectors such as coal, iron ore, steel, fertilizers, and other commodities, enabling industries to transport goods more efficiently across different regions. Freight revenue also grew by 6.27% in August 2026 compared to the same month in 2025.
