Indian Railways carries 67.27 crore passengers in August: Suburban travel up 9%

Indian Railways transported a record 67.27 crore passengers in August 2026, marking a 4.4% increase from the previous year's 64.43 crore passengers, according to the Ministry of Railways. Suburban travel witnessed a significant 9% growth, with 38.01 crore passengers using suburban services compared to 34.89 crore in August 2025.

This surge in demand for suburban rail services underscores the importance of affordable transportation in densely populated urban areas. During the Rakshabandhan festival period, the Railways operated 144 special train services, a notable increase from 48 trips in 2025. New Amrit Bharat train services were introduced to expand long-distance connectivity between major cities and regional centers, reflecting the national transporter's efforts to enhance connectivity and provide more travel options.

Additionally, seven special trains were regularized to Amrit Bharat services, further bolstering the railway network. In terms of freight, Indian Railways transported 137.9 million tonnes in August 2026, a 5.4% increase year-on-year, driven by demand from coal, iron ore, steel, fertilizers, and other commodities. The introduction of 5 new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, bringing the total to 149, is aiding in improving rail connectivity for industries and strengthening the country's logistics network.
