Hyundai Motor Group targets hands-free urban driving by 2029

Hyundai Motor Group aims to introduce hands-free autonomous vehicles in cities by 2029, starting production in the second half of that year. The company announced its strategy during an autonomous driving media event at its autonomous driving software subsidiary, 42dot, in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. The plan involves a dual approach: utilizing Nvidia's autonomous driving technology to speed up commercialization while concurrently developing its own advanced system to ensure long-term technological independence.

Initially, Nvidia's vehicle AI computing platform and autonomous driving software will be integrated into Level 2+ vehicles by mid-2028, allowing drivers to remove their hands from the wheel on highways. The capability to drive hands-free in urban areas, Level 2++, will be expanded upon in the latter half of 2029. Simultaneously, Hyundai is enhancing Atria AI, an end-to-end autonomous driving system co-developed internally.
