Hyundai Motor Group targets hands-free urban driving by 2029

Hyundai Motor Group aims to introduce vehicles capable of autonomous driving without hands-on the wheel in urban settings by the middle of 2029, according to a strategy unveiled at a media event in Seongnam. The company plans to launch these vehicles a year earlier, equipped with Nvidia's proven autonomous driving technology. The plan hinges on a dual-track approach: leveraging Nvidia's AI computing platform and autonomous driving software for Level 2+ vehicles as early as the first half of 2028, and progressing to Level 2++ vehicles by the latter half.

Level 2+ permits drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel on highways, while Level 2++ expands hands-free capabilities to city streets. Simultaneously, Hyundai is advancing its own proprietary end-to-end (E2E) autonomous driving system, Atria AI, developed in collaboration with Advanced Vehicle Platform.
