Heavy police deployment for Kenya opposition rally

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, a rising opposition figure, prepared for a political rally in the Kenyan capital on Sunday. The event, dubbed Linda Mwananchi (protect citizens), was met with a heavy police presence following a series of political violence incidents in recent weeks. Sifuna, 44, has gained traction by capitalizing on public discontent over corruption and political unrest.

Despite his supporters' rowdiness and a large number of officers maintaining a perimeter, Sifuna's rally began with a church visit in central Nairobi early Sunday, drawing hundreds of attendees. A church-goer, Juliette, expressed her fear, stating she did not anticipate such a heavy police deployment. She warned that the president might send his supporters to disrupt Sifuna's rally, dismissing any notion of differing opinions.

Sifuna's previous rallies have been marred by armed gangs attacking his supporters and the media, while politicians from all sides often recruit young men to protect themselves and confront opponents, leading to deadly confrontations. Recent reports claim that hundreds disrupted a rally for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in Embu county and clashed with police.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) revealed that six individuals were killed and dozens more injured in attacks on civil society meetings and political gatherings in recent months. HRW's deputy Africa director, Carine Kaneza Nantulya, emphasized the impending threat of returning to human rights abuses that have marred Kenya's previous elections.

She appealed to authorities to break the cycle of violence by ensuring that those accountable for the actions cannot operate with impunity.
