Electricity demand peaks this September, unscheduled power cuts return to Tamil Nadu

In September, the State of Tamil Nadu experienced a resurgence of unscheduled power cuts due to the sweltering heat and elevated electricity demand. As the month unfolded, parts of the State, including Chennai, underwent prolonged summer conditions, leading to a surge in power consumption. The State's power demand reached a peak of 20,500 MW, significantly higher than the previous year's average of 16,000 MW-17,000 MW.

This surplus of 3,000 MW prompted the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) to purchase additional 2,000 MW to avoid a crisis.

The power consumption in the bustling city of Chennai surged beyond the 5,000-MW threshold in June, oscillating between 4,200 MW and 4,500 MW. During this season, Chennai's power demand typically ranged from 3,500 MW to 3,800 MW. TNPDCL officials attributed the sudden increase in demand to the extended summer period.

Recent protests against the unscheduled power cuts erupted across Tamil Nadu, specifically in Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, and Ambasamudram, where residents took to the streets in Tirunelveli, Tiruchi, and Ambasamudram. Demonstrators protested against regular nighttime power cuts in areas like Royapuram and Tiruvallur. In Thandurai village, residents endured a power cut lasting over eight hours daily due to a damaged underground cable near Paruthipattu. Despite restoration efforts by TNPDCL, intermittent disruptions persisted in the village.

TNPDCL officials assured the populace that measures were being implemented to maintain a consistent and uninterrupted power supply throughout the State. In Chennai, a team of senior officials monitored the power grid and distribution system continuously, responding swiftly to complaints. The TNPDCL's commitment to addressing the power crisis and ensuring reliable electricity remained steadfast amid the recurring power cuts.
