Digital skills training producing solution-driven youth for Ghana’s future – Sam George

Ghana's Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, highlighted the significance of digital skills development in the country's transformation plan. He emphasized the need for young innovators who can create technology solutions instead of simply consuming them. At the graduation of the first cohort of the Digital Skills Project, a collaboration between Plan International Ghana and Nokia, 26 young graduates showcased their ability to apply digital skills to solve real-life community problems.

Each participant developed a working capstone project, demonstrating their capability to build rather than just talk about technology. George commended Plan International Ghana and Nokia for their commitment to equipping young people, particularly girls, with digital competencies. He stressed the importance of practical learning and innovation in narrowing the digital divide and creating opportunities for underserved communities.

The One Million Coders Programme, aimed at equipping one million Ghanaians with practical digital skills, was also discussed. As of August 2026, the program had enrolled 141,954 learners, with high demand in cybersecurity, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. George encouraged the graduates to leverage this initiative to deepen their skills and expand their career prospects.

He noted that the true measure of digital skills programmes is the beneficiaries' ability to secure employment, establish businesses, solve societal problems, and create opportunities for others. George also stressed the importance of gender inclusion in the technology sector, urging the female graduates to pursue careers in software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science and technology entrepreneurship.
