Delhi Gandhi Nagar Building Tilts, MCD Evacuates Structure Over Collapse Risk

New Delhi witnessed panic and concern in Gandhi Nagar area on September 13 after a four-storey building suddenly tilted. Residents living nearby expressed worry over the incident, which prompted immediate action by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The entire building has been evacuated and the surrounding area cordoned off to prevent people from approaching it.

Following the occurrence, a team from MCD arrived on the scene to assess the condition of the building and initiate further necessary steps. Former Mayor Shyam Sunder Aggarwal, who reached the location upon learning about the incident, reported observing cracks between two houses and noted that one of the buildings had also slightly tilted.

He confirmed that teams from the Municipal Corporation, police, and fire department had also reached the spot. Officials found significant risks of the building collapsing, leading to the precautionary evacuation of the structure to safeguard lives. Aggarwal warned of potential major accidents should the building collapse, highlighting the dangers posed by such structures.

The former mayor pointed out the necessity of action against illegal constructions and dilapidated buildings that threaten public safety. He questioned where authorities had been during the construction of multi-storey buildings, implying potential negligence or collusion. This incident comes in the wake of another building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on September 6, where at least seven people were killed, further underscoring the pressing concerns over the safety of old and potentially dangerous buildings in densely populated parts of the city.
