Construction of Cameron Highlands bypass yet to begin, suspension calls premature, says Works Ministry

KUANTAN, Sept 13 — The Ministry of Works has acknowledged media reports and concerns surrounding flash floods and landslides in Cameron Highlands, debunking rumors of a temporary suspension of the Cameron Highlands Bypass Project. Public Works Department spokesperson explained that the project encompasses the construction of the Tanah Rata Bypass, upgrading of Federal Road FT59 from Tanah Rata to Kea Farm, and upgrading of Federal Road FT434 (Jalan Griddle).

Currently, the project remains in the design and assessment stage, with no physical construction work underway, aside from routine maintenance on existing roads.

The department clarified that claims linking the flash flood incident to the project's physical construction activities are inaccurate. Preliminary investigations revealed that the flooding reported in the Taman MARDI and Padang Awam areas of Tanah Rata occurred on secondary roads, which are not part of the primary road alignment involved in the project.

However, a minor landslide did occur on Jalan Tengkolok, an area encompassed by the project contractor's routine maintenance responsibilities. Clearing operations were promptly carried out, ensuring traffic safety and smooth flow.

The Ministry of Works underscores the importance of addressing slope safety, geological conditions, drainage systems, and disaster risks. The project's implementation is contingent upon meeting all assessments, approvals, and technical conditions set by relevant authorities, including Environmental Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment, geotechnical requirements, and local authority approvals. Physical construction work will commence only after the fulfillment of these prerequisites.
