China, Russia, India seek economic cooperation at BRICS

BRICS leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened for a second day of discussions in New Delhi on Sunday, focusing on inclusive global growth. Modi emphasized the bloc's significance, representing 50% of the world's population, 40% of global GDP, and over 25% of global trade.

The group, established in 2009, aims to increase its global influence and address various challenges, such as conflict, trade turbulence, and energy security. On the first day of the summit, leaders struggled to agree on a joint statement regarding the Middle East conflict, but ultimately expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions and called for maximum restraint.

Xi's participation in the BRICS summit is significant as it marks his first visit to India since 2019, symbolizing a growing relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The underlying territorial dispute, however, remains unresolved, and both countries maintain heavy military deployments along their 3,500-kilometer border.

Despite deep mistrust, both India and China pledged to work together to promote high-quality financial cooperation, an equal and sustainable global order, and an inclusive economic globalization.
