Break-in attempt at ex-US VP Kamala Harris' Malibu house

Private security personnel detected an unauthorized individual attempting to enter the ex-US Vice President Kamala Harris' Malibu residence on a Friday night, according to officials and Harris' spokesperson. The individual was intercepted before they could reach the property, according to Eduardo Negrón, Harris' spokesperson. Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not present at the time, the spokesperson added.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was notified around 10.30 pm by the Malibu Lost Hills deputies after receiving a report of a suspicious person. The deputies arrived to find the trespasser already stopped by the private security, who were outside the property. No arrest was made as the individual left voluntarily, declared the sheriff's department.

Following the incident, patrols around the property were heightened for precautionary reasons. Harris and Emhoff had recently purchased the Malibu beach house for $8.15 million in December, a purchase that had sparked speculation about Harris' potential political ambitions, particularly a possible run for president in 2028. The incident also renewed interest in Harris' security arrangements, which had been extended by former President Joe Biden beyond the typical six-month period for former vice presidents. However, President Donald Trump ended that protection in 2025.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the California Highway Patrol would assume responsibility for Harris' security. The cost of the state-funded security detail has not been disclosed.
