Bhuleshwarcha Raja Mandal To Celebrate Ganeshotsav Simply After 22-Foot Idol Collapse Killed Two Devotees

Mumbai's Bhuleshwarcha Raja Ganeshotsav Mandal has announced plans to observe Ganeshotsav in a simple manner this year, following a devastating incident during the idol's arrival procession. A 22-foot Plaster of Paris (PoP) idol collapsed during the procession on Balaram Merchant Road, near Kabutarkhana, Jai Ambe Chowk, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and injuries to five others, including two girls.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Saturday when a section of the nearly two-tonne idol, en route from a Byculla workshop, suddenly gave way and crashed onto a group of devotees and others in attendance.

Police are awaiting the results of a forensic report, expected in around 10 to 15 days, to determine the reason behind the structural failure and to assess if there were any violations of safety norms. The investigation has so far gathered statements from approximately 20 individuals, including the sculptor responsible for the idol's creation.

In light of the tragedy, the Mandal has decided to install a much smaller, two-foot Ganpati idol for the 10-day festival, dedicated to prayer and devotion. Mandal president, Sunil Lonare, stated that the decision was made to commemorate the event with simplicity, given the loss of life. He added that discussions were ongoing regarding potential assistance for the families of the deceased and those injured in the incident.

The collision occurred amidst a large crowd of followers participating in the procession, which featured dhol-tasha performances and added to the festive atmosphere.
