Bamanga Tukur buried in Yola

Former Governor of Gongola state, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of impact on Nigeria and the African continent. Vice-President Kashim Shettima expressed deep sorrow over Tukur's demise, emphasizing that he was a true patriot, global citizen, and an institution in his own right. Shettima recounted Tukur's significant contributions in three distinct realms: as a technocrat who modernized Nigeria's maritime infrastructure, as a statesman and politician who governed with vision, and as a pan-African business leader who elevated Africa's private sector on the world stage.

During his tenure as General Manager and CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, Tukur cleared congestion, built the Tin Can Island Port Complex, and modernized various ports such as Apapa, Warri, Calabar, Sapele, and Onne. These efforts saved the Nigerian economy from collapse and established a vital trade gateway.

Shettima highlighted Tukur's political career, noting that although his governorship of the old Gongola State was abruptly ended in 1983 due to military intervention, his vision for rural development and education left a lasting impact. The Vice President paid tribute to Tukur as a technocrat, statesman, and global icon, praying for his soul's forgiveness and a place in Aljannatul Firdaus, while assuring the people of Adamawa that Nigeria would never forget the great loss Tukur represented.
