Backlash grows over Trump's 'completely wrong' comments on Irish reunification

Donald Trump expressed his desire for a united Ireland during his official visit to Ireland, stating that the reunification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland would be "fantastic." The two regions have been divided for over a century, with the island currently split between the Irish Republic in the south and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 ended decades of sectarian violence but allows for a referendum to be held if the UK government believes a majority in Northern Ireland would favor unification with the Republic. However, the Irish government has not actively pursued such a referendum, and the UK prime minister has insisted that the idea is "off the table."

The US has maintained a position of neutrality on the matter. Upon meeting Ireland's Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Trump suggested that the UK would have concerns about the potential reunification but believed it was inevitable. However, some pro-British representatives criticized Trump's comments, emphasizing their opposition to the dissolution of Northern Ireland.

Despite the political tensions, Trump's visit included a security operation and a golf tournament at his resort in Ireland, drawing both support and protest from locals.
