ASUU calls off four-week strike at Benue varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) has terminated its four-week "No Pay, No Work" industrial action. This decision was communicated in a statement released on Sunday by the union's chairperson, Terseer Abari. According to Abari, the union's decision to end the strike came after negotiations had progressed and some of the issues that led to the strike were resolved.

The ASUU chairman commended the branch members for their resilience, unity, patience, and commitment throughout the industrial action. He emphasized that the outcome of the struggle once again underscored the significance of collective action and solidarity in advocating for the legitimate interests and welfare of university workers.

Abari also acknowledged the university administration's cooperation and efforts during the dispute, expressing gratitude for the union's readiness to continue constructive discussions with the management on matters related to staff welfare, members' interests, and the institution's continued development. The ASUU branch urged its members to resume their work and approach their responsibilities with renewed dedication.

The branch reaffirmed its commitment to ASUU's principles and traditions, stating that it would continue protecting the legitimate interests and welfare of its members through collective bargaining and constructive engagement. Abari also expressed gratitude to students, members of the public, stakeholders, organizations, and other individuals who supported or showed understanding during the strike period.

The FUAM branch had initiated the industrial action on August 12, 2026, demanding the full payment of its members' Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
