Anthropic CEO calls for ‘pacing the frontier’ of AI race amid safety concerns

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown in the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence to address safety concerns. Speaking in an essay and an interview, Amodei emphasized the need for humanity to "pace the frontier" of AI development, warning that unchecked progress could lead to catastrophic consequences. He acknowledged the possibility of AI being misused for cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption, and noted that people may ultimately lose control over the technology.

Amodei suggested that AI companies hire third-party evaluators with full-company access to ensure safety practices, report incidents, and review AI models and processes. He also called on governments to establish common safety standards to regulate the technology. The call for a slower pace in AI development came after an Anthropic researcher's resignation over concerns about the firm and its competitors' responsible AI development.

Executives and senior researchers have privately expressed fear about AI's potential dangers, despite often framing their concerns more cautiously in public statements.
