AI, smart tech to drive next phase of mass transit in Qatar

Qatar’s public transport network, Qatar Rail, is set to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and smart mobility systems to enhance its operations, according to Jassim Mohamed al-Ansari, the company’s CEO. This technological leap follows the network's milestone of transporting over 300 million passengers since its inception. During the Autonomous e-Mobility Forum, al-Ansari unveiled the company’s priorities, which include evaluating new projects to improve passenger experience and support Qatar’s environmental goals.

Al-Ansari highlighted several projects the company is studying, such as AI-powered chat services to provide real-time information about available services, and smart guidance systems to assist passengers with disabilities in navigating metro stations. These digital initiatives aim to streamline the passenger experience, particularly for those with disabilities, by offering convenient and accessible navigation support.

The CEO emphasized that the integration of these new technologies follows the high public usage of the transit system, which has transported over 300 million passengers since its launch. This figure underscores the strong public demand for mass transit and reflects the trust Qatar Rail has built with the community. To complement the metro journey, Qatar Rail has also developed first- and last-mile services, including a metrolink feeder bus service, to connect stations with surrounding neighborhoods seamlessly.

Environmental sustainability is a core focus for Qatar Rail, as al-Ansari noted that the company continues to adopt eco-friendly solutions to align with national environmental targets. The addition of electric buses to the metrolink fleet is one such initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions and building a cleaner public transit model for the future.

Al-Ansari stressed that future urban mobility relies on blending different transport modes with smart technology, with autonomous vehicles being a key element of this transition. He emphasized that integrating public transport modes and smart solutions can enhance system efficiency, improve accessibility, and provide more comprehensive and reliable mobility options, contributing to better traffic flow in cities.

The CEO attributed the network’s current success to ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and other partners, highlighting the ministry’s central role in coordinating the country’s sustainable transport policies. Qatar Rail remains committed to supporting new transport initiatives and participating in industry events to exchange expertise with local and international partners.

These collaborations aim to develop the public transport sector further, meeting community needs and improving the quality of life in Qatar.
