Abdulmumin Kofa at 50: The Making of a Political Force

Abdulmumin Kofa turns 50 this year, having spent half a century in politics that began at age 34 when he joined the House of Representatives. Despite his young age, Kofa was entrusted with significant responsibilities, serving as chair of the House Committee on Finance and later the Committee on Appropriations—a role that granted him control over federal budgeting.

His academic achievements, including two doctorates and an MBA from prestigious institutions, distinguish him from many of his colleagues and have contributed to his reputation as a legislative strategist. Kofa played a pivotal role in the election of Speaker Yakubu Dogara in 2015 and again in 2019 as Director General of Femi Gbajabiamila’s campaign.

His career has not been without controversy; he led a whistleblowing campaign in 2016 accusing Dogara and other officials of unauthorized budget allocations, leading to his suspension but reinforcing his reputation for standing up to authority. Currently, Kofa chairs the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, a testament to his enduring relevance in Nigerian politics.

Over his 50-year career, Kofa has navigated political landscapes with remarkable flexibility, shifting between the PDP, APC, and NNPP parties without losing his supporters.
