3 best psychological thriller movies on Prime Video you (probably) haven't seen

Prime Video offers a wide selection of psychological thrillers, many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Three such underrated films are Room For Rent, Look Away, and Open 24 Hours. Each presents a unique and captivating story that audiences may not have experienced before.

In Room For Rent, Joyce, played by Lin Shaye, finds herself in a small Arizona town following the loss of her husband. Left with little to her name, she decides to rent out a spare room in her home. A charming young tenant named Robert, portrayed by Oliver Rayon, moves in, and Joyce's escapism into romance novels begins to intertwine with her perception of Robert.

As her fixation grows, she becomes willing to resort to forgery, staging alibis, and other dangerous measures to maintain her idealized life. The line between fantasy and reality becomes increasingly blurred, raising the question of just how far Joyce will go to be with Robert or merely to hold onto the illusion of a perfect partnership.

Look Away focuses on Maria, an introverted high schooler played by India Eisley, who faces bullying from her peers and emotional distance from her family. Her plastic surgeon father, Jason Isaacs, is fixated on perfection, while her emotionally distant mother, Mira Sorvino, offers little solace. Maria turns to her reflection for solace, which begins talking back, adopting the persona of Airam.

Airam offers to take care of those who have wronged Maria and suggests a swap of roles between Maria and Airam. After embracing this new persona, Maria's life begins to change dramatically, with her mirror image now assuming control and settling scores on her behalf. The film raises the possibility of whether Maria's newfound confidence is genuine or merely a product of deception.

Lastly, Open 24 Hours follows Mary, portrayed by Vanessa Grasse, as she emerges from a mental institution after setting her boyfriend on fire. The boyfriend, James, played by Cole Vigue, was a serial killer known as the Rain Ripper who forced Mary to witness his brutal murders. Society shuns Mary due to her troubled past, and she becomes medicated in response to her hallucinations.

Mary takes up a solitary overnight shift at a gas station, where she starts seeing James in every corner of the building. As more people around her meet mysterious and untimely deaths, Mary becomes uncertain about the extent of her own hallucinations versus the reality of James's ghostly presence. The film leaves viewers questioning the line between her perception and actual events as James's ghost lingers ominously.
