14,830 Sarawakians affected by flying doctor suspension

The Flying Doctor Service (FDS) in Sarawak has been temporarily suspended, affecting approximately 14,830 residents across 85 rural localities, according to the health ministry. The suspension came after a helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Ulu Baram, which tragically resulted in the loss of five lives on Tuesday.

In response to the incident, the ministry has suspended FDS operations until it is fully confident that the operational capabilities and service delivery system are safe. The ministry is currently reassessing healthcare services for each locality, taking into account factors such as accessibility and local conditions. Alternatives to FDS are being considered, but only after thorough risk assessments, including evaluations of route conditions, travel time, weather, and vehicle suitability, to guarantee the safety of healthcare personnel.

Certain localities have faced significant geographical and infrastructure challenges. For instance, those residing in Pa Tik may need up to two days of walking to reach the Bario health clinic. Similarly, inhabitants of Ba Itam, Ba Abang, and Long Tebangan would have to travel anywhere between four to ten hours to access the Long Bedian health clinic due to disrupted routes and collapsed bridges.

In high-risk areas, the ministry plans to enhance cooperation with the fire and rescue department and armed forces, especially for emergency medical evacuations. The length of the FDS suspension will depend on the results of the official investigation into the helicopter crash. The ministry's strategy aims to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare through risk-based, phased, and accountable measures, prioritizing the safety of both healthcare personnel and patients.
