14,830 Sarawakians affected by flying doctor suspension

The Flying Doctor Service (FDS) in Sarawak has been temporarily suspended, impacting approximately 14,830 residents spread across 85 rural areas, as revealed by the health ministry. The suspension came after a tragic helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Ulu Baram, which claimed the lives of five individuals on Tuesday. The ministry is meticulously evaluating healthcare services for each locality, taking into account accessibility and local conditions, while prioritizing alternative transportation methods such as land and water routes.

However, some regions face significant geographical and infrastructural challenges, making access to healthcare even more difficult. For instance, residents of Pa Tik may need up to two days to reach the Bario health clinic on foot, while those in Ba Itam, Ba Abang, and Long Tebangan could take four to 10 hours to access the Long Bedian health clinic due to disrupted routes and collapsed bridges.

In such high-risk areas, the ministry plans to enhance collaboration with the fire and rescue department and armed forces, particularly for emergency medical evacuations. The duration of the FDS suspension will depend on the outcome of an official investigation into the helicopter crash, with the ministry committed to resuming operations only when assured of the safety of the operational capabilities and service delivery system.

This approach aims to guarantee continued healthcare access through risk-based, phased, and accountable measures without jeopardizing the safety of healthcare personnel and patients. The FDS was suspended following the helicopter crash incident.
