Xenophobia: Over 30 Nigerians killed by South African police since 2022 – Ambassador

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Danny Jordaan, the individual who orchestrated the 2010 World Cup, has been re-elected as president of South Africa's soccer federation on Saturday. This re-election came about despite his ongoing legal battles with fraud allegations. Jordaan, who is 75 years old, secured 157 votes compared to his challenger Sandile Zungu's 82 votes, as announced by the South African Football Association (SAFA).

Jordaan has been the head of SAFA since 2013 and will continue in this role for a fourth term. Although he played a crucial role in bringing the World Cup to Africa for the first time in 2010, his tenure has been marred by controversies. These controversies include a 2015 allegation of receiving a $10 million bribe from South Africa to a FIFA official and a 2017 allegation of rape by South African singer and activist Jennifer Ferguson, which was later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

In 2024, Jordaan was arrested and charged with fraud and theft for allegedly misusing around $70,000 while serving as SAFA president. He was also charged alongside other individuals, including a former CEO and CFO of SAFA. The fraud charges have faced numerous delays and have yet to proceed to trial. Jordaan and his co-accused maintain their innocence.

The election process itself faced additional challenges, with some voting officials receiving death threats and others experiencing harassment and intimidation. SAFA informed the police about the threats but did not disclose the identity of the individuals behind them.
