Wahlen: CDU-Politiker in MV fürchten Scheitern an Fünf-Prozent-Hürde

Marc Reinhardt, deputy chairman of the CDU faction in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, expresses concern over the party's prospects of entering the state parliament prior to the upcoming Landtag election. Reinhardt noted to the "Tagesspiegel" that there is apprehension regarding a failure to surpass the five-percent threshold. The "Tagesspiegel" also quoted former party and faction leader Eckhardt Rehberg, who stated that recent polls suggest the CDU may withdraw from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament.

The state election is scheduled for September 20. According to a "Wahlen Forschungsgruppe" survey, the CDU currently stands at seven percent. If the party performs similarly in the election, it would represent its worst outcome in a state election since the establishment of the Federal Republic. CDU candidate Daniel Peters told Welt-TV that the party is confronting a serious situation due to the escalating intensity of the election campaign and persistent criticism of the federal government.

"We are in an existential battle now." Minister-President Schwesig is criticized for contributing to the CDU's weakened standing, as polls indicate she is strengthening the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Green Party, with Green co-chancellor Franziska Brantner also expressing her discontent. The "Augsburger Allgemeine" (Saturday) noted that Schwesig's electoral victory would be meaningless if the Green Party did not participate in the Landtag.
