[UPDATED] Era of single-party government is over, says Tok Mat

Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has declared that the era of single-party governments in Malaysia is coming to an end. He emphasized that the party must acknowledge this new reality, which was the foundation for President Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's proposal to form political understandings with other parties. In his final remarks at the 2026 Umno General Assembly, Mohamad stressed that Umno should not assume it can govern unilaterally.

He highlighted the strong "Bangsa Johor" sentiment in Johor state, which has been bolstered by the state government's performance under Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. Mohamad interpreted this as a major wave of support for the Johor government, which he believes is a significant shift in political dynamics. He noted that this sentiment, along with the Johor government's strong performance, is driving Umno's strategy to lead the federal government after the upcoming 16th General Election.

Zahid's presidential briefing and policy speech at the general assembly outlined Umno's direction and preparations for this potential leadership role. The president also set out the framework for the government Umno intends to offer to voters, urging delegates to clearly communicate this to members in their respective divisions. Mohamad urged delegates to explain this strategy to their members, ensuring that the grassroots can understand and engage with the party's vision.
