UK anti-migrant activists, counter-protesters face off in flashpoint city

On Saturday, anti-immigration protesters and counter-demonstrators gathered in Portsmouth, southern England, in a tense standoff. Both sides had organized rallies, with police announcing a ban on face masks due to concerns about potential violence.

The event marked the latest in a series of confrontations between anti-migrant protesters and authorities. Six days prior, clashes erupted between demonstrators, many dressed in black and wearing masks, and police. Officials had criticized the incidents as "thuggish" and vowed to prevent similar outbreaks.

Retired individual Colin O Malley attended the protest, stating, "We're making a stand, sending a message to the government... illegal immigration has got out of hand, and it needs to stop." Attendees of the Stand Up to Racism rally chanted, "Refugees are welcome here," emphasizing their opposition to racism and far-right extremism.

Hampshire Police, responsible for the city, had previously banned masks at protests due to concerns about violence and intimidation following the unrest witnessed in Portsmouth and Dover. Political leaders across various spectrums had previously condemned the violence, blaming it on far-right agitators. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood had met with police officials on Thursday to ensure readiness for potential further incidents.
