Trump defended his stance, claiming that a united Ireland would be beneficial and stating, "I think it would be a great feather in everybody's cap if that happened."

He also noted the presence of Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin, suggesting the presence of a suitable leader to push for the unification. The remarks are expected to exacerbate tensions between the US and the UK, particularly regarding Britain's capability to defend the Falkland Islands. The Conservative Party deputy leader, Alex Burghart, criticized Trump for being "very wrong" in his opinion, while calling Northern Ireland an "integral part" of the United Kingdom.
