Saudi Arabia Suspends Key Oil Pipeline After Drone Attacks From Iraq Amid Regional Tensions

Saudi Arabia has suspended operations on its crucial East-West oil pipeline following drone strikes originating from Iraq, heightening apprehensions about vulnerabilities in regional energy infrastructure. The Saudi Foreign Ministry announced the measure, refraining from immediate retaliation in response to an Iraqi request. The kingdom emphasized the need for Iraqi authorities to curb attacks emanating from their territory against Saudi Arabia and neighboring nations.

However, Riyadh retained the authority to implement any necessary security measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and vital facilities.

The Energy Ministry ordered a precautionary shutdown of the East-West pipeline after multiple attacks were reported in Riyadh and Medina regions on Thursday. An official from the Energy Ministry disclosed that the strikes resulted in injuries to several individuals. The pipeline was halted as a precautionary measure, according to the official.

Satellite imagery revealed potential fire damage at one pumping station, with multiple fires detected near the pipeline. Some locations were identified as flare pits, utilized for burning excess oil and gas during emergency scenarios.

The East-West pipeline carries crude oil from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, enabling the nation to export oil while circumventing the Strait of Hormuz. The route has gained heightened significance due to disruptions stemming from the US-Iran conflict. Saudi Arabia has been utilizing the pipeline to divert around 5 million barrels of oil daily, previously transported via Persian Gulf shipping routes.

The recent attacks have heightened concerns over potential threats to alternative export channels, particularly in light of Houthi fighters warning they may target Saudi vessels traversing the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The incident underscores the escalating challenges faced by Saudi Arabia as regional tensions persistently endanger oil production facilities and transportation networks.
