Reform of UN Security Council can no longer wait: PM Modi at BRICS summit

In his address at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that reform of the United Nations Security Council cannot be postponed any longer. Modi urged for text-based discussions on the matter to be tied to a specific timeline and clear outcomes. He proposed that the Global South should evolve from being passive "rule-takers" to active "rule-shapers", with BRICS contributing to the development of the diplomatic and institutional capacities needed to facilitate this shift.

Modi also suggested that BRICS could offer young diplomats from Global South nations with negotiation skills, practical training, and legal expertise. He underscored the importance of holding the summit on the same day as the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, viewing it as serendipitous that a decision impacting the Global South was being made on a day celebrating it. India, Modi stated, is prepared to spearhead this endeavor.
