‘Practical Magic 2’: still witchy, but not so bewitching

Nearly three decades after audiences last witnessed the enchanting story of the Owens sisters in "Practical Magic" (1998), Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as Gilly Owens and Sally Owens, respectively. The sequel "Practical Magic: The Book of Magic" explores whether the wait was worthwhile, and the answer is not entirely convincing.

Opening with a direct nod to its predecessor, Sally Owens (Bullock) uses a spell to keep her daughters Kylie (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams) unaware of their witchy heritage, following a tragedy. However, witchcraft finds its way back to them, as the family curse resurfaces when Kylie's boyfriend Gideon (Xolo Maridueña) faces danger. Determined to save him, Kylie takes her sisters on a journey to London to confront their past and seek the help of Professor Ian Wright (Lee Pace).

Despite the charm and nostalgic elements tied to the original film, “Practical Magic: The Book of Magic” feels overly long and convoluted, with a surprisingly weak antagonist. The storyline often feels predictable, with plot twists that can be anticipated well in advance. While the acting is commendable, especially the reunion of Bullock and Kidman, the supporting cast, including Maisie Williams and Joey King, struggle with emotional scenes and underdeveloped roles.

The emphasis on sisterhood is a positive aspect, but their dynamic feels somewhat disjointed, with the sisters often apart. Overall, while there are moments of warmth and witchiness that may appeal to fans of the original, "Practical Magic: The Book of Magic" ultimately falls short of delivering a truly captivating sequel.
