The Project Management Institute (PMI) has refreshed the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification to better reflect the evolving demands of modern project delivery. This change comes amid the rapid advancement of technology and the need for project professionals to develop a diverse skill set beyond technical knowledge.
George Asamani, Managing Director of PMI Sub-Saharan Africa, explains that the 2026 refresh emphasizes business alignment, strategic decision-making, stakeholder engagement, leadership, sustainability, and real-world delivery in AI-enabled environments. The new exam tests candidates' ability to apply project management principles in real situations, including decision-making, managing competing priorities, engaging stakeholders, and keeping projects focused on value.
The research by PMI shows that 35% of CEOs consider a disconnect between planning and execution as their top barrier to reinvention, while 34% cite the failure to continuously upgrade talent for the future. With the demand for project professionals expected to rise globally, PMI aims to equip professionals with the capabilities that organizations increasingly seek and help them remain globally competitive.

Despite the changes, existing PMP certification holders will not need to retake the exam.
