Navi Mumbai Ganeshotsav 2026: MSEDCL Makes Prepaid Smart Meters Mandatory For Temporary Power Connections

Navi Mumbai residents will be required to use prepaid smart meters for temporary power connections during religious festivals, such as Ganeshotsav, starting this year. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is implementing this policy, mandating advance payment for such connections. Organisers of public celebrations, including festivals from various faiths like Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Eid, Diwali, and Christmas, must pay in advance for electricity use on a system similar to mobile recharges.

MSEDCL has urged Ganesh mandals to obtain only authorised electricity connections and strictly adhere to safety norms during the festivities. Failure to comply can result in serious accidents, including short circuits, fires, and potential harm to devotees and citizens. The company warns that unauthorized electricity use can lead to imprisonment under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, along with penalties.

To ensure safety during idol arrival and immersion processions, mandals are advised to consider the height of overhead power lines and to engage certified electrical contractors for pandal and decorative lighting. MSEDCL recommends strong foundations, waterproof and fire-resistant materials, safe wiring, quality electrical equipment, and clear emergency access routes for pandals.
