Murder charge over the fatal Sydney shooting

A Sydney teen, 18, faces murder charges after allegedly operating a drone during a mistaken identity shooting in Merrylands West, police allege. Joshua Macdonald, 40, was killed at his home on September 2, after being shot and left unconnected to organised crime. The fatal incident occurred the day following another mistaken identity shooting in Glen Alpine, which claimed the life of 23-year-old university student Marco Talia.

Earlier this week, police arrested two men, aged 18 and 19, in connection with Macdonald's murder. The younger suspect was charged with murder, involvement in a criminal group, and contributing to criminal activity, with his court appearance scheduled for the following day. The older man was charged with participation in a criminal group, contributing to criminal activity, and driving with a suspended license, and was released on bail.

Police seized a drone during the raid, and detectives claim to have found evidence suggesting his involvement in the fatal shooting. Police Superintendent Joe Doueihi stated he was likely conducting surveillance on someone or some premises when apprehended. This incident marks at least the fifth suspected mistaken identity killing in New South Wales since May 2025, raising concerns about reckless criminal leaders operating overseas.

Officials insist the situation remains under control, but the acting premier and police minister expressed challenges in managing the situation.
