Malaysia's 'makan' culture welcomes a taste of Spain

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite rain and heavy traffic on Wednesday, the warm atmosphere inside Barra Restaurant remained unbroken as Spanish diplomats, chefs, and food enthusiasts convened to celebrate their shared love for culinary delights. Sergi Farré Salvá, Spain's Ambassador-designate to Malaysia, highlighted the significance of food as a natural bridge between the two nations.

Farré, who joined Malaysia a month ago, emphasized that "makan" - one of the first words learned in Bahasa Melayu - is a cornerstone of Malaysian culture, and the celebration at Barra would be a "makan-makan" extravaganza.

Farré deemed food a "universal connector" and described their gathering as more than a meal; it was a cultural and artistic experience, reflecting the fusion of tradition, creativity, and innovation inherent in Spanish gastronomy. The ambassador-designate is set to formally present his credentials to Malaysia's King, Sultan Ibrahim, in late October or early November.

During the event, Farré officially bestowed the Restaurants From Spain certification plaque upon Chef Gabriel Bonin and Chef Ignasi Prats, alongside the Barra team. Awarded by the Spanish government via ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, this certification acknowledges restaurants abroad that serve authentic, top-tier Spanish cuisine and champion Spanish culinary culture.

Barra, established in April 2024, is part of The Tamarind Restaurants group, whose concept in Kuala Lumpur's Chinese district, according to Guía, mirrors Barcelona. He credited chefs Bonin and Prats for shaping Barra's identity. Bonin expressed pride in being part of the Spanish community, emphasizing the challenge and responsibility that come with the prestigious certification. He affirmed that the recognition fuels their commitment to continually deliver exceptional Spanish gastronomy.
