Malaysia, Ethiopia explore wider economic cooperation across key sectors

Malaysia and Ethiopia are actively exploring broader economic cooperation in several key sectors, including halal products, agriculture, food security, pharmaceuticals, digital services, renewable energy, and tourism. This cooperation aims to capitalize on the strengthening of their diplomatic ties by converting them into commercial opportunities.

During a bilateral meeting held during the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit, Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ethiopia's Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali discussed potential areas of expansion in economic cooperation. They explored possibilities to bolster trade, investment, and private-sector participation across multiple sectors.

Malaysia's knowledge base in the halal economy could be instrumental in helping Ethiopia with halal products, certification, food processing, and related industries. Both countries also see potential in agriculture and food security, aiming to enhance food supply resilience and agricultural productivity.

In terms of pharmaceuticals and digital services, Malaysia and Ethiopia could explore partnerships through business-to-business cooperation, technology collaborations, and knowledge exchange. Renewable energy and tourism sectors also present promising avenues for deeper engagement, offering opportunities for investment and technical cooperation.

These discussions align with Malaysia's broader strategy to strengthen economic ties with African nations and identify new markets for Malaysian businesses. The first Malaysia-Ethiopia Bilateral Consultation, slated to take place in Kuala Lumpur next year, is anticipated to serve as a platform to further develop these areas of cooperation. It will also provide an opportunity to pinpoint specific projects and commercial ventures that could emerge from these talks.
