Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes near Jakarta

Early Saturday, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook the vicinity of Jakarta's Thousand Islands, with tremors felt in the Indonesian capital and wider areas of Java and Sumatra. The earthquake's epicentre was located in the Java Sea, 69km northeast of the city, at a depth of 368km. The original magnitude was revised from 5.9 following additional analysis.

Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Earthquake and Tsunami director Wijayanto stated that the quake was a deep one caused by intraslab activity, and that tsunami modelling indicated no tsunami threat.

The strongest tremors were reported in parts of Banten, West Java, and southern Sumatra, including Tanggamus and the Tanggamus region. Many people indoors in these areas experienced perceptible shaking that could cause windows and doors to rattle. Additionally, the tremors were felt indoors in Jakarta's Tanjung Priok and other areas.

Weaker shaking was reported as far away as Yogyakarta, Malang, and Padang, as well as the Mentawai Islands in western Sumatra. However, there were no aftershocks reported by the BMKG as of 5 am.

In response to the earthquake, KAI Commuter suspended Commuter Line services to conduct thorough inspections of railway tracks. Regular services resumed for several lines, including Bogor, Cikarang, Rangkasbitung, Tanjung Priok, and Tangerang, at different times throughout the morning.
