Magnitude 6.3 earthquake strikes Java Sea

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck near Jakarta’s Thousand Islands on Saturday morning, according to Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) data. The epicenter was located in the Java Sea, approximately 69km northeast of the Indonesian capital. The tremors were felt in Jakarta and across parts of Java and Sumatra.

The earthquake's initial magnitude was reported as 5.9 before being revised following further analysis. The epicenter was situated at a depth of 368km, and its location and depth were attributed to an intraslab activity, according to BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami director Wijayanto. A tsunami threat was not identified due to the depth and location of the earthquake's hypocentre.

The strongest tremors were reported in Banten and West Java, as well as Tanggamus in southern Sumatra. Many residents indoors in these areas felt the shaking, which could cause windows and doors to rattle. Weaker shaking was also felt across Yogyakarta and Malang in Java, and in Padang and the Mentawai Islands in western Sumatra.

According to Wijayanto, Saturday's earthquake was tectonic in origin, and BMKG reported no aftershocks as of 5 am. KAI Commuter suspended Commuter Line services following the earthquake to conduct thorough inspections of railway tracks. Commuter Line services resumed after inspections were completed, beginning with the Bogor, Cikarang, Rangkasbitung, and Tanjung Priok lines at 5.26 am, followed by the Tangerang line at 5.45 am.
