India’s First Vande Bharat Freight EMU Completes 130 Kmph Trial Run On Western Railway Network For High-Speed Cargo Operations

India's inaugural Vande Bharat Freight EMU underwent a critical 130 km/h trial run on the Western Railway network on Saturday, signaling a pivotal moment in assessing the high-speed train's operational potential. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) carried out the Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Run (COCR) along the Ahmedabad–Vadodara–Mumbai Central route, with the train being evaluated under defined operating parameters.

The rake, positioned at ICD Sabarmati, was equipped by the RDSO team with support from the Mechanical, Electrical, and S&T departments of the Ahmedabad Division. It commenced its journey from Ahmedabad at 9 am, bound for Mumbai Central, with the Western Railway providing an uninterrupted pathway for the high-speed trial. The test was executed during daylight hours, adhering to all applicable Permanent and Temporary Speed Restrictions.

The trial's significance lies in its evaluation of the freight rake's stability and performance at speeds up to 130 km/h. Data gathered via sensors and a Data Acquisition System throughout the run will enable RDSO to analyze the rake's operational characteristics and efficiency at this elevated speed. A skilled Vande Bharat crew, including a guard, Chief Loco Inspector, Traffic Inspector, and Permanent Way Inspector, was on duty for the trial.

Additional personnel from the Central Workshop (C&W), Station and Traffic (S&T) departments, along with technical experts from the Indian Coach Factory (ICF) and representatives from Medha and Kern, were prepared to address any technical concerns encountered en route. The trial also entailed considerable logistical and safety measures.

The rake had to meet stringent specifications before the run, and security teams ensured its protection around the clock at Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central. The return COCR run is scheduled for the following day, September 13, when the rake will travel from Mumbai Central to Ahmedabad at 9 am. The two-day trial is generating considerable interest as the railways assess the Vande Bharat platform's capacity for swifter freight transportation.
