India-Russia Defence Push: How Su-57, $11 Billion 'Super Sukhoi' Upgrade Will Bolster IAF Amid Rising Challenges

India and Russia are strengthening their defense ties as part of New Delhi's security strategy. High-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin revolve around a joint defense package worth $11 billion. This package aims to upgrade the Indian Air Force (IAF) by introducing the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter and modernizing the existing Su-30MKI fleet.

The IAF is currently facing a shortage of fighter squadrons, with only 29-31 active squadrons compared to the sanctioned strength of 42. The retirement of legacy platforms like the MiG-21 has further reduced the available fighter aircraft. Meanwhile, India's indigenous fifth-generation fighter program, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), is still years away from operational service, leaving a capability gap.

The Su-57 proposal addresses this gap by offering a new-generation stealth fighter with advanced stealth technology, sensor systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and network-centric combat systems. Russia has indicated willingness to explore joint production, technology transfers, and integration of Indian requirements into the programme. This could bolster India's push towards domestic defence manufacturing under the 'Make in India' initiative.

In addition to the Su-57, the proposed 'Super Sukhoi' upgrade could provide an immediate boost to the IAF's capabilities. With around 260 Su-30MKIs currently in service, the modernization programme would involve upgrading these aircraft in phases with advanced radar systems, avionics, electronic-warfare suites, engines, and weapons systems. The objective is to increase the combat effectiveness of the existing Su-30MKI fleet rather than wait for the delivery of new fighters.
